John Papasian
History doesn’t always disappear in dramatic ways. Sometimes a whole world slowly drifts out of sight. Egypt’s royal court was one of those worlds. For decades, it shaped society, conversation, and even the rhythm of life in cities like Cairo and Alexandria. Secrets of the Royal Court of Egypt looks back at that environment not as distant history, but as a lived experience, an era remembered through the people who moved within it.
About The Author
John Papasian
John Papasian was born in Alexandria in 1914.
At the time, the city was known for something unusual: its mixture of cultures. Greek merchants, Armenian families, Egyptian officials, European travelers. They all shared the same streets.
And sometimes the same conversations. Growing up in that environment meant stories were everywhere.
Art eventually became John Papasian’s path. His studies later took him to Europe, where he continued developing his work and eventually attended the Accademia di Belle Arti in Rome. Painting remained central to his life, and his work later appeared in exhibitions in Rome, Athens, London, Beirut, and Cairo. But John Papasian was also an observer.
He watched people carefully. Through acquaintances and social gatherings, he occasionally encountered individuals connected with Egypt’s royal court. Their stories revealed a world that was elegant on the surface yet complicated underneath.
Years later, he began writing those memories down.
What started as a reflection slowly became this book.
About The Book
Secrets of the Royal Court of Egypt
Most history books begin with a timeline. This one doesn’t really feel like that.
Secrets of the Royal Court of Egypt unfolds more like someone recalling a world they once knew. A society that revolved around Egypt’s monarchy and the dynasty established by Mohamed Ali Pasha. It was a world filled with personalities, ambitions, friendships, and the quiet tensions that naturally grow around power. At the center stood the royal court.
But the court did not exist in isolation. Alexandria and Cairo were vibrant meeting points for people from across the Mediterranean. Merchants, diplomats, artists, intellectuals, all passing through the same social circles.
Languages blended. Traditions overlapped.
For many years, this environment seemed permanent. That is the strange thing about history. While you are living through it, it rarely feels temporary.
Gradually, the atmosphere surrounding the monarchy began to change. Political expectations shifted. Public attitudes evolved. The balance that had once held the royal system together slowly began to loosen.
Looking back now, the world described in these pages feels almost like a memory from another lifetime.
